ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN – COLD CHAIN

A permanent position, based in Stellenbosch (Western Cape Province) from early 2025

The southern African citrus industry is the second largest exporter of fresh citrus fruit in the world and has earned global recognition as a premier supplier of superior-quality citrus fruit. Citrus Research International (CRI) aims to maximise the long-term global competitiveness of southern African citrus growers through the development, support, coordination, and provision of research and technical services.

CRI currently has a vacancy for an Engineering Technician – Cold Chain in Stellenbosch (Western Cape), expected to be filled in early 2025. The successful candidate will provide technical and engineering support within the cold chain research programme, gaining exposure to a wide range of engineering technologies and methodologies. The role includes research support, often related to operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting engineering-related equipment, performing detailed evaluations of cold stores and refrigerated containers, overseeing data collection and monitoring systems, and contributing to packaging and cold chain performance assessments. This position presents a unique opportunity for professional growth through hands-on involvement in various engineering challenges, directly influencing the efficiency and sustainability of postharvest logistics.

The ideal candidate must have an NDip in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical) or equivalent, with a preference for BEng or MEng qualifications. Candidates should have experience in equipment maintenance, cold chain operations, data processing, and automation. Familiarity with programming languages (Python preferred) for sensor integration and data automation will be advantageous. Strong communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work in a research-driven environment, are essential. Experience working with growers, packhouses, and cold store operators will be beneficial.
